Underwriting

Underwriting Services

Underwriting is the process of ensuring that APRA collects the right amount of money to cover the cost of claims, reinsurance, and the provision of services in any given year, and then appropriately distributes those costs among the membership.

Through collecting information about members’ exposures – buildings, autos, employee payroll – and considering its past claims experience, APRA’s underwriting team can fairly allocate costs for each type of coverage among the members.

We know that from time to time, members’ build, buy, or sell buildings, autos, and other covered property. APRA wants to know the changes you’ve made, so that your next year’s contributions will be accurate.

If your entity has made such a change and you work with a broker, please contact your broker, who will report the information to APRA.

If your entity is not working with a broker and you want to report a change, please contact the APRA underwriting team: underwriting@alaskarisk.org.

An important part of ensuring that contributions are allocated fairly is having the correct values for each member’s buildings. Reinsurers, who provide the financial backing for large losses, expect that APRA will have accurate values for each building it covers.

As APRA provides full replacement coverage for property losses, the accuracy of a building’s value is even more important.

The APRA Board has embarked on a program to ensure that covered buildings are accurately valued, providing funding for an independent firm – Young & Associates – to review the higher-value buildings that APRA covers and make sure that the valuations on the books correctly reflect what it would cost to rebuild each building in the event of a total loss.

As buildings are valued, members and their brokers will receive a report that they can review and provide input on any information they think is incorrect. The new building values determined by the appraisals will be reflected in the contributions for the next coverage year.
